Phil Plait’s Bad Universe coming to a Discovery Channel near you
Having been a fan of Phil’s for a long time, having met him and read his books, I couldn’t wait to hear about his “sooper sekrit” project he’s been working on for a long time. Last week he announced it but the trailer video had to be taken down for technical reasons. Now it’s fixed and back up. See for yourself.
Can’t wait to see this program.

Brian Cox on TED
As Phil Plait put it in his blog entry:
In April 2010, physicist and outspoken lover of science Brian Cox spoke at a TED meeting about the state of science funding in the UK and the world, and why we do science. Trust me, you need to find the 17 minutes today to watch this.
I do agree.

This is what this woman knows about science.
“We all know it wasn’t something that happened 20 years ago, but now is happening now”.

Rescued Baby Hummingbird Fed in Hand by Mother
This is an old one I found. I’ll let them tell the story:
An amazing story about a baby hummingbird that was found on a sidewalk. He couldn't fly, so I took him under my wing. At night, he would come home to our house for safety. During the day, he was in the backyard of the house near where I found him. About 4 days after I found him, I was holding him in my cupped hands when his mama came by to feed him. She had seen me around, I guess, because she just flew over, perched on my hand and then fed him. This happened a number of times, so I called a friend who is good with a video camera, and he came over to film some of the amazing goings on that I told him about."
There's more to this story, but that's enough info to give you some context for the video we posted to YouTube.

Is the universe 13 billion years old? 6,000? How can you tell?
Ethan Siegel tells you how in his wonderful piece How you can figure out the Age of the Universe!
Ethan Siegel is a theoretical astrophysicist at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR.I follow his blog as he posts detailed explanations to everyday astronomical and astrophysical questions.
Just remember: The Universe doesn't care what you think of it, and as the late Carl Sagan said: The Universe was not made for us.

One of the best jokes I heard
One of the greatest jokes of all time:
Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?”
He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”
He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too!”
Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over.

Photo of the Day
Laughing gull passes by.
Gulls are a dime a dozen around here. I seldom shoot pictures of them as they are kind of boring, but they make for good BIF practice. This one was coming in very close and I thought it came out nicely.
