200 year old cabinet. See what it can do

The Roentgens' Berlin Secretary Cabinet

“This antique cabinet is over 200 years old. For a long time it was owned by King Frederick William II and you can find it now on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is by far one of the finest achievements of European furniture making. Watch what it can do and then remember this was all done with hand tools.”

Impressive!

See jets from Rosetta’s comet up close

Emily writes a nice piece on her blog including a close-up picture of cope Churyumov-Gerasimenko (Wikipedia) from Rosetta (Wikipedia) where you can see jets from the comet.

Ketchikan Airport

A place I always wanted to see was Ketchikan Airport (Wikipedia). I had “visited” it many times in Microsoft Flight Simulator, flying in and out of the place and around the beautiful Misty Forjds National Monument (Wikipedia) in SE Alaska.

When you have the excellent add-on by ORBX for Ketchikan Airport (link) the fidelity and reality is astounding. Even down to the docks and the sloped taxiways.

When we took the cruise to Alaska earlier this month, one of the stops was in Ketchikan, It is a nice little town (see my photo gallery) and as the airport is in another island, just in front of the town, we passed close enough for a good look. The weather as usual in a rain forest, was of course rainy, but I still shot a good set of photos of the airport, the famous sloped taxiways (needed because of the lack of space in the place), and the ferry that passengers have to take to cross in and out of the airport.

Tower and terminal

General view

The ferry (you can see the sloped taxiway coming down from the runway)

The floatplane section (very common in Alaska)

Because: Science!

I always love watching Larry Krauss

Another view of the Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm Fjord (Southeast) Alaska, between Ketchikan and Juneau.
The weather in Ketchikan was rainy as always so the colors are subdued due to the clouds and mist. They call the area the "Misty Fjords" for a reason!

Too close and too big to take a whole-ship photo.

Alaska!

Last week we took a cruise to Alaska!
We went on the Celebrity Solstice, from Seattle to Southeast Alaska.
The photos you saw here last week were pre-posted, from photo outings earlier this year.
I came back with lots of images from the trip, which will be showing up here in the future (and always all of them in my website of course).

This is the Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm in Southeast Alaska, between Ketchikan and Juneau.
The weather did not help in Ketchikan, rainy as always (no wonder they call the area the Misty Fjords!).
