Sally Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012)

Sally Ride, American physicist and astronaut died today of cancer. So young. So sorry to see her go.

Today in 1962 – Telstar relays the first publicly transmitted, live trans-Atlantic television program, featuring Walter Cronkite.

Today is a momentous day we all take for granted. On 23 July 1962, 50 years ago, Telstar 1 was launched on a Thor-Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.200px-Telstar Before the telecommunications satellite were launched in the early 1960s, there was no live TV coverage of news and sports as we are used to today. This happened in my lifetime and it is awesome to think about.

It was part of a multi-national agreement between AT&T, Bell Telephone Laboratories, NASA, the British General Post Office, and the French National PTT (Post, Telegraph & Telecom Office) to develop experimental satellite communications over the Atlantic Ocean.

A successor, Syncom 3, broadcasted pictures from the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Apollo 11 landing!

763px-Apollo_11

Today in 1969 Apollo 11 lunar module, carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (seen above with Michael Collins who stayed in moon orbit), landed on the moon. About 7 hours later Armstrong took the first step.

I remember it as if it was yesterday (dating myself here). It was the middle of the night in my time zone and I was young but what a memory!

Discrimination. The Boy Scouts middle name

Shame on them and their supporters.

Boy Scouts Reconfirm Policy: No Gays Allowed

A special committee of Scout executive and adult volunteers formed in 2010 concluded unanimously that the anti-gay policy was the "absolute best" for the 100-year-old organization, national spokesman Deron Smith, told The Associated Press.

Steve Lopez: Boy Scouts' ban on gays, bigotry over values

“The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth developed organizations,” says the organization’s website. The BSA is about character and responsibility, and the group “has helped build the future leaders of this country by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun.”

What kind of values?

Bigotry, for one.

Teach the kids to hate from an early age. Smart move.

Morningstar: Top 10 Myths About Social Security

Morningstar.com has a great piece titled: “Top 10 Myths About Social Security”

They cover myths such as:

  • Social Security is going bankrupt.
  • It's a Ponzi scheme
  • Social Security pays generous benefits.

and my favorite:

  • We're all living longer, so we should raise the retirement age.

They quote Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist:

"It basically says that janitors should be forced to work longer because these days corporate lawyers live to a ripe old age."

Good piece to read:
