Senator Daniel Inouye (September 7, 1924-December 17, 2012) was the senior United States Senator from Hawaii, and the President pro tempore of the United States Senate.
A senator since 1963, Inouye was the most senior senator at the time of his death. He is also the second longest serving U.S. Senator in history after Robert Byrd. Inouye continuously represented Hawaii in the U.S. Congress since it achieved statehood in 1959 until the time of his death, serving as Hawaii's first U.S. Representative and later a senator.
He was a Nisei Japanese-American, as the son of a Japanese immigrant father and a mother whose parents had also immigrated from Japan.
He was an army soldier in WWII, and awarded many medals including the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Sen. Inouye died today of respiratory complications. He was 88 years old.
