Photo of the day
I always loved Black & White (B&W) photography. When I was a kid (15 years old) I had a small lab in the bathroom. I processed B&W film (like Tri-X) which I bought in big drums from the local Kodak dealer. I hated the smell of the chemicals but that was a small price to pay to be able to create something.
Today, I do it digitally which is different, easier and certainly cleaner. It may not have the charm of old B&W photography but it allows for endless forms of creativity.
For the next few days I'll post some of my favorite B&W photos, some recent, some from the archives, not yet posted in this blog. Hope you like them. Please let me know in the comments.

Photo of the day
We went for a one-day visit to Sarasota, Fla.
The sun was very sporadic. Was lucky to catch a short moment of sun for the controversial "Unconditional Surrender" statue in Sarasota's Bayfront:
The thing is big! I waited for a tourist to - of course - look up her skirts to have a frame of reference:

Candid shot at Bal Harbour jetty
If you looked at my Gallery, you'd see that I do a lot of Candid shots/Street photography. Un-posed, un-rehearsed photos are fun. It is a way of documenting what people do in everyday life, as many great photographers like Alfred Eisenstaedt, did in years past. Thanks to them we get a glimpse of what life was like in the 1930s or 1940s for example.

One of my favorite types of photography, which I do a lot of, but do not post often here (see my Gallery) is "street photography" and candids. I love to show people doing what they do everyday. I see it as documenting a slice of life.

A meteorite found on Mars!
The Mars Rover Opportunity found a little while ago a decent-size meteorite while cruising around in Mars. This is an extraordinary find for the things it tells us. One of the most important clues is that it points to a thicker atmosphere on Mars long ago, which strongly hints at the presence of water. I could explain some more, but I'll let Ethan Siegel, a bona-fide astronomer tell the story.

Green Heron eating. This is the last stage of "The Flip" when a bird moves the prey around to be parallel to the beak, so as to be able to gulp it down.

I’ve been published!
I have written for magazines in the past, but always on computer software, technical articles. This is my first article on photography.
Nature Images Online Magazine, a new online magazine, published my article “Ruddy Turnstones”, a short piece about these wonderful little birds. The site is run like a blog with guest writers, and is about nature photography, especially birds.
Hope you like it.

Know how your business works!
Mark Stout, a professional photographer wrote an excellent article about a case of a photographer getting one of his photos on the cover of Time Magazine. You’d think he got paid thousands to land such a good gig. You’d be wrong. He received only pennies, literally, as he was a slave to microstock.
I am not a professional photographer, nor do I want to be, but this is an eye opener for anyone going into business for him/herself. Know how the business works!

A walk in Miami Beach at night
I rarely go out for night photography. Lately, mostly impressed by the work a friend of mine has done in New York, I was tempted to try my hand, as you can see by the previous posts.
This time I took a walk on Lincoln Rd., a pedestrian street full of restaurants, stores and people. With a Nikon D300 in hand, a tripod, and a Nikkor 28mm-2.8 AI lens (old- manual focus lens from the 1970s, sharp as a tack as you can see), I went out. Here are some of the shots (click on any picture to embiggen):
Hope you liked this set. I am pleased with the results.
