Roseate spoonbill in flight
Merrit Island NWR

One of my goals for this trip to Viera and Merrit Island was to get spoonies in flight. They are very rare in So. Florida but plentiful in this area in Central Florida, if you know where to look. We took a small boat (enough room for four, just three photographers and the captain) and we went to this island in the middle of nowhere in a wide bay. It is uninhabited except for hundreds of birds that like to nest there. Herons, egrets, cormorants, white pelicans and lots of roseate spoonbills.
