Miniatur Wonderland: World’s Largest Model Railway
Miniatur Wonderland in Hamburg is the world’s largest model railway. Watch this video describing the place and even showing the control room.
With 7 miles of tracks in an area of over 16,000 sq ft, 200,000 people, 4,000 cars, 800 buildings, it features 6 geographic regions. It’s a work in progress with a goal of more than 13 miles of tracks. The builders have already clocked in more than 500,000 hours of work.

Helen Levitt (1913-2009) RIP
Helen Levitt, a celebrated New York street photographer passed away. As a street photography enthusiast myself, I know how difficult it is to do it right. She did it right.

On February 28th, a team of four Spanish teenage students and their instructor from IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia launched a weather probe they designed and built themselves. Their helium-filled balloon carried a payload of electronics and a camera to take atmospheric measurements and photographs throughout the trip. After getting permission from aviation officials and getting good weather, they released the probe on a trip that took it over 30,000 meters (19 miles) above sea level, through winds gusting up to 100 kph, and temperatures reaching -54C (-65.2F), and traveling 38 kilometers overland in a time of 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Very nice work from these kids (oh how times have changed). Lots of photos, and they used a Nikon to boot! :)

Catching up on my blog reading I see the Bad Astronomer posts that Carl Sagan's masterpiece, all 13 episodes of Cosmos is on Hulu.com!
I loved it years ago, and watched it on video a few times. Now it's accessible to a new generation of budding scientists! Yeah!

Saw the Shuttle Launch from afar
The space shuttle Discovery launched a few minutes ago from the Cape. It was at 7:43 pm and the weather couldn't be better. Not a cloud in the sky so we were able to see it all the way from Miami, 200 miles away! It was a beautiful ball of fire, with a long golden plume that turned into white contrails after separation. What a sight!

The Seattle P-I is going away
These are sad times when major city newspapers have to shut down operations. This is the case with the Seattle Post-Inteligencer, which has been in operation since 1881 in its present form.
On January 9, 2009, the Hearst Corporation put the P-I up for sale, saying that if the paper was not sold within 60 days, it would either be turned into a Internet-only publication with a drastically reduced staff, or closed outright.
Newspapers fill a vital function as an informed public is crucial to maintaining a vibrant democracy. I am saddened to see them go, especially in a city like Seattle which I truly love and enjoyed in my many visits.

Richard Dawkins’ Response to Oklahoma Rep Who Tried to Ban Him

A state representative filed a resolution to stop Richard Dawkins from speaking at the Univ. of Oklahoma.
WHEREAS, the University of Oklahoma, as a part of the Darwin 2009 Project, has invited as a public speaker on campus, Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published opinions, as represented in his 2006 book “The God Delusion”, and public statements on the theory of evolution demonstrate an intolerance for cultural diversity and diversity of thinking and are views that are not shared and are not representative of the thinking of a majority of the citizens of Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, the invitation for Richard Dawkins to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma on Friday, March 6, 2009, will only serve to present a biased philosophy on the theory of evolution to the exclusion of all other divergent considerations rather than teaching a scientific concept.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 52ND OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:
THAT the Oklahoma House of Representative strongly opposes the invitation to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma to Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published statements on the theory of evolution and opinion about those who do not believe in the theory are contrary and offensive to the views and opinions of most citizens of Oklahoma.

Photo of the day
Planespotting at Miami International.
If you love aviation, planespotting is fun. Besides photographers, every day I find families with children looking at landings and takeoffs. With the economy as it is though, I find, particularly in Miami, a very marked slowdown in traffic. It used to be years ago you could see three or four planes in the landing pattern for each runway. Nowadays there are times when you can have 15 minutes or so without a single plane. Tough times.

Photo of the day
I have been doing quite a bit of planespotting at Ft. Lauderdale International airport (this photo) and also at Miami International. There are many visitors, mainly from Europe in winter doing the same thing. I met people from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Poland and also from Canada and some northern US states. All praised our airports a very photographer friendly and with quite good locations, which is very true.

I went to Gulfstream Park (Hallandale, Florida) a while ago. I am not a gambler and had never visited but living close by I figured it was a nice photo opportunity. It was fun Beautiful weather, nice horses and lots of interesting looking people to photograph.
