Virgin unveils spaceship designs
Virgin Galactic has released the final design of the launch system that will take fare-paying passengers into space.
It is based on the X-Prize-winning SpaceShipOne concept - a rocket ship that is lifted initially by a carrier plane before blasting skywards.
The Virgin system is essentially a refinement, but has been increased in size to take eight people at a time on a sub-orbital trip, starting in 2010.

Bobby Fischer passing
Bobby Fischer passed away. He was a chess genius and a certifiable nut.
I vividly remember seeing him when I attended the Fischer-Petrosian match in Buenos Aires in 1971 where I lived at the time, which he won allowing him to challenge Boris Spassky for the World Championship.
That is one of the memories from childhood that I never forgot as I was a chess-enthusiast at a young age.
Update: Jason Rosenhouse has the best article and remembrance on Fischer I've read.

123 years ago today
On January 15, 1885 Wilson Bentley first photographed a snowflake by adapting his microscope and bellows camera. He pioneered photomicrography. Talk about patience and perseverance to get your subject!

Interesting images of original 1904 Bentley letters to the Smithsonian here and here.

The Grand List of Overused Science Fiction Clichés
A friend sent me this list of "The Grand List of Overused Science Fiction Clichés"
It is not new but new to me. It is also rather long so, cut to the best part: "Section IV: Silly Science (clichés)"
Some samples:
* A robot or other AI speaks progressively more slowly as it shuts down from some malfunction.
* Don't know the code for the lock? Just shoot the keypad. The door will open.
* The artificial gravity is the last system of all to fail.
* A large dose of radiation results in super powers instead of super tumors.
