State Approves Evolution As 'Scientific Theory'

The State of Florida approved the using of the E-word in their school curriculum but with the addendum that is is named the 'Scientific Theory of Evolution', in order to appease the fundamentalists that now can claim a "victory" as "it is only a theory". Yes, just like the Theory of Gravity and the Theory of Relativity.

Small gains, are at least some gains.

    Alex,

When these people say 'just a theory' are they really so ignorant or just being disingenuous?
A scientific theory isn't just an idea someone puts forward after a few beers by the pool or wandering, homeless, around a desert for a few years.... it's an idea that has been developed into a formal hypothesis, tested against observable phenomena, successfully predicts previously unobserved phenomena and (with a very few exceptions) co-exists with other similarly tested theories. An idea has to undergo extensive and rigorous examination before being elevated to a 'theory' at which point it is generally accepted to be the best available description of how the world works.
I know you know this but such wilful idiocy enrages me and that comments button was just too tempting.... Nigel Gomm

  2. They are that ignorant. They basically want to argue against science without having taken the time or trouble to learn the basics of science. They have no clue what a scientify theory is and they confuse it with the common lauman usage of the word. They argue against evolution without having read one book on it or having taken one class on biology.

The State Board finally kind of humored them, to get the measure passed, by adding the word "theory" to it. The fundies think they won a victory because it is therefore "just a theory" (i.e. unproven), when they still don't understand it is as much a scientific fact as the theory of gravity or the theory of electromagnetism.
