Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home
“It's about the captain of a troubled voyage facing a mutiny. The second movement where you constantly hear, "I'm getting closer to my home." is supposed ghost of the captain after he is killed. The way it fades out to the orchestral music is kind of spooky. It takes real creativity to put together a song like this, which you rarely find in today's music.” – Sigmaman69

Nate Silver Says Marco Rubio is as Unelectable as Mitt Romney Was
The name of rock star statistician Nate Silver will be forever linked with the results of the 2012 Presidential election. You may recall that against the tide of Republican strategic hubris, and despite rampant voter suppression efforts taking place in communities representing large populations of poor and ethnic constituents, Silver warned the GOP talking heads that Obama was on his way to a sweeping victory. And he was right. In President Obama’s historic conquest over Mitt Romney, Silver correctly predicted the winner of all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Let’s take a moment to savor once more the epic meltdown of Karl Rove on Fox News as it finally sank in that there was zero chance of a Romney presidency…

B612 Foundation– We all need to help
I am a contributor to the B612 Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes.
Formed by Astronauts Edward Lu and Rusty Schweickart, they are trying to raise private money to put a telescope in orbit (called SENTINEL) to give us early warning of incoming asteroids.
As we say today with the impact at Chelyabinsk, and the close pass by 2012 DA14, both in one day, it illustrates the need and the urgency for this. We have the technology. All we need is the money and the political will.
I donated to the foundation. Would you consider making a small donation too! It is too important to let it go by.
Galileo 's birthday
Galileo Galilei
February 15, 1564, Pisa – January 8, 1642
Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism. Galileo has been called the father of modern observational astronomy, the father of modern physics, the father of science, and the Father of Modern Science.

Asteroids - We can fight them!
As Phil Plait once said:
"The difference between us and the dinosaurs is that we have a space program, and we vote."
Rubio and the Zombies
An interesting opinion page by Nobel Laureaute Paul Krugman at the New York Times:
"On the other hand, the G.O.P. reply, delivered by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, was both interesting and revelatory. And I mean that in the worst way. For Mr. Rubio is a rising star, to such an extent that Time magazine put him on its cover, calling him “The Republican Savior.” What we learned Tuesday, however, was that zombie economic ideas have eaten his brain."http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/15/opinion/krugman-rubio-and-the-zombies.html?_r=0

Asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass very close by tomorrow
As many of you know, tomorrow, February 15, Asteroid 2012 dDA14 (50 meters across) will pass very close to Earth. So close indeed that it will be within the orbit of geosynchronous satellites, at about 27,000 kilometers (17,000 miles).
The odds of hitting Earth are zero, this time and for the next few years when it comes back (next time it will pass much further away, but it shows us the need for governments to fund the means to detect and deflect this dangers. We have the technology. What we need is the political will.
Here is a very nice animation of what the near-miss will look like.

Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer has an excellent write-up explaining all of this. Go read it for all the details!

The Surrounding Game trailer
An extended trailer for the upcoming "The Surrounding Game" has just been posted. This is a Kickstarter Project about the Game of Go (my favorite game for over 35 years). I am a humble contributor to the project and wish I was a stronger player (don't we all)?
Meet Go - humanity's oldest and most magnificent game. Behind the simplicity of black and white, wood and stone, lies a vast world that can change your perspective on life forever.
International Darwin Day
Today we celebrate the birthdate of Charles Darwin, one of the best and most important scientists that ever lived.
Many of today’s sciences, including biology, medicine, and anthropology to name a few, are based on his work.
